Overview

Iconic Quail Island is located in Lyttelton Harbour. This 81 Hectare island reserve has a rich history including use as a collection and storage site for fish and shellfish by Maori, a leper colony and also a quarantine site for cattle and at one point for dogs used on Antarctic expeditions. Nowadays Quail Island is a scenic reserve, home to white flippered penguins and oyster catchers. Looking away from the island during the circumnavigation provides spectacular views of the Lyttelton Harbour volcanic rim. This iconic RealSwim Adventure was part of our custom swim options. It has proven very popular therefore we are advertising specific dates for this swim now so you don’t miss out. The swim starts from Corsair bay in Lyttelton.

The 4km swim is a direct line over to Quail Island and after a light refreshment a direct line back. You’ll have fantastic perspectives of the volcano rim throughout the swim and a view of Quail Island only seen by a few.

The 8km swims timed to start 1.5 hours prior to High Tide. Ideally you’ll swim around the back of Quail Island at high/slack tide and have a gentle outgoing tidal push to help bring you home in Corsair Bay. Distance is about 8km in total.

Both swims are sportive, swim as fast as you like or stop for a chat and drink on the way, take in some of the beautiful sights of Quail Island and Lyttelton Harbour volcano rim.

When you complete the loop back to Corsair we will have a hot drink waiting for you on the beach and certificate of completion.

FAQ

What sort of food is available?

RealSwim Adventures will supply some snacks during and immediately following the swim. Please bring your own clearly marked drink bottle with your choice of refreshment.

There is a coffee shop at Naval Point that is normally open at the end of our swims.

What is the climate like?

Water temperatures average 17.5 C. As in any part of New Zealand the weather can change at a moments notice. Be prepared is the best motto. Bring summer clothes and warm clothes. We reserve the right to alter the swim program should weather dictate it is prudent to do so.

Is Lyttelton Harbour safe?

As with most open water swim events, other people (boat traffic) is probably one of the biggest hazards. You’ll have an escort throughout your swim but please be aware we may well ask you to share your escort with other swimmers of a similar speed. If you specifically require your own individual escort please let us know and be aware there will be an additional cost.

What else do I need to know?

This is a fully escorted sportive swim. It is not a race. The sense of accomplishment and the joy of swimming a unique open water route are the rewards in this activity. We will be able to tell you a general completion time. Your rewards for completion will be the stories, the memories and the hot cuppa.
